(Dhivehi: އަލްއަމީރު މުހައްމަދު އަމީން ދޮށިމޭނާ ކިލެގެފާނު) (July 20, 1910- 1954) popularly known as Mohamed Amin Didi was a Maldivian political figure. He served as the first president of the Maldives and as the head of government between January 1, 1953 and August 21, 1953. Amin Didi was also the principal of Majeediyya School from 1946 to 1953.

Mohamed Amin Didi was the leader of the first political party in the Maldives, Rayyitunge Muthagaddim Party. He was well known for his efforts for the advancement of women and education in Maldives.

With the support of the people he abolished the 812 years old sultanate and became the first president of the Maldives on 1 January 1953. But he always supported a constitutional Monarchy.

After the death of Sultan Majeed Didi and his son Prince Hassan Fareed Didi, the members of the parliament chose Mr Amin Didi to be the next person who is capable to be as a sultan. But the same moment he stood up and shouted that "for the sake of the people of Maldives I would not accept the crown and the throne". And so a referendum was held and Maldives became a republic. But the republic was short lived and a revolution was brought by the people of Male`,while the president was in Ceylon for medical treatment.

Velaanaagey Ibaraahim Didi ,the vice president of Amin became the head of revolutionary government and ordered to arrest Mr Amin Didi as soon as he returned. Mr Amin Didi was not aware of these events which had taken place in his absence and he returned to the country ignorant of what have happened .

When he returned, he was arrested and taken to Dhoonidhoo island. He was told on the way that he is not any more the president. Four months later after his arrest, secret letters were exchanged between him and Ibrahim Hilmy Didi, to bring an end to this revolutionary government and to restore the monarchy. Ibrahim Hilmy as the king and Amin Didi as the prime minister. (Mr Ibraahim Hilmy lied to Amin Didi by saying that the people are still on his side). And ome might Amin didi came to male and tried to take control of badeyrige.People were so angry that he was beaten nearly to death. Then he was thrown into a small boat (bohkuraa near male).

Later the leaders of this small rebel group who wanted Mohanmed Amin as their leader were brought to court including Mohamed amin didi ,Ibrahim Hilmy Didi and Shamsuddin Hilmy Didi. These three people were sentenced to banish for life.

Mohamed Amin was banished to K.Gaafaru,Ibraahim Hilmy was Banished to K.gulhi and shamsuddin Hilmy was banished to K.hinmafushi.

As the former presidents health became deteriorating he was brought to Vihamanaa fushi Island (now kurumbaa village). On 19 January 1954,the first president of Maldives,a leader who tried his best to modernise his country died.A small funeral was held on vihamanaa fushi and he was buried in that island. His daughter Al nabeela Ameena attended to the funeral.

The people of Maldives has describe ex-president H.E.P Maumoon Abdull Qayyoom as, THE MAN FOR ALL ISLANDS & Mr.Roystan Ellis has endosed it Internationally.

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom

In office
11 November 1978 – 11 November 2008
Preceded by Ibrahim Nasir

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (Dhivehi: މައުމޫނު އަބްދުލް ގައްޔޫމް) (born December 29, 1937) was President of the Maldives from 1978 to 2008; currently, he is the leader of the opposition, heading the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party. After serving as Minister of Transport, he was elected as President by the Majlis and succeeded Ibrahim Nasir on November 11, 1978. He eventually became the longest-ruling head of government in Asia. After 30 years in office, he was defeated in the October 2008 presidential election and was succeeded by Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldivian Democratic Party on November 11, 2008.[1]

As Ibrahim Nasir's second term was coming to an end, he wanted someone else running for the presidency. In June 1978, the Citizen's Majlis was called upon to nominate a presidential candidate. 45 voted for Nasir, while the remaining 3 voted for Gayoom. There was another ballot on 16 June, in which four people participated. 27 voted for Gayoom, enough for him to be put forward as a candidate.

Five months later, he was elected with 92.96% of the votes as the new President of the Maldives. The grand reception of his inauguration was held at Majeediyaa School on the night of 10 November 1978. In a 1983 referendum, he was re-elected by 96.62%, for a second term. He was last re-elected to a sixth five-year term in October 2003 with 90.28% of the vote; he was the sole candidate, having been chosen by the Majlis.

He assumed office on 11 November of the same year and on completion of his first 5-year term as president, was re-elected on 30 September 1983 for a second term of office polling a record 95.6% of the popular vote. On 23 September 1988, he was re-elected for a third term of Presidency by the overwhelming majority of 96.4% of the popular vote. On 1 October 1993, he was elected for a fourth term of office winning 92.76% of the popular vote. Again, on 16 October 1998, President Gayoom was elected for an unprecedented fifth term of office with a clear majority of 90.9% of the popular vote.

The President of the Maldives is both the Head of Government and Head of State, with very little distinction between the two roles, therefore Gayoom was also the Commander-in-Chief of the Maldivian armed forces, the Maldives National Defence Force. In a 2007 referendum, voters approved a presidential system with direct election of the president, the option favored by Gayoom, rather than a parliamentary system.

2008 elections

Standing as the DRP candidate, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's term ended in the second round of the October 2008 presidential election; this was the country's first democratic presidential election by popular vote. He received 45.75% of the vote against 54.25% for his opponents, MDP's Presidential Candidate Mohamed Nasheed and Gaumee Itthihaad's Vice Presidential Candidate Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan. President-elect Nasheed and Vice President-elect Dr. Waheed accordingly succeeded Gayoom as President on November 11, 2008. Gayoom is still remaining as the leader of his party.

The present modern Maldives has breathing in to new life in politics by the name of DEMOCRACY.

After 30 years of ex presidents dictatorship from 1978 to 2008. MDP is Maldives house hold name in Politics.

There leader International recognized as a ASIAN OBAMA & MANDELA.

If Maldivian loose him that will be second ASSASSINATION of DEMOCRACY in MALDIVES after Mohamed Ameen Didi.

Mohamed Nasheed

Incumbent
Assumed office
11 November 2008
Vice President Mohammed Waheed Hassan
Preceded by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom

Mohamed Nasheed (Dhivehi: މުހައްމަދު ނަޝީދު) or Anni (Dhivehi: އަންނި) (born May 17, 1967) is the current President of the Maldives. He is the founder of the Maldivian Democratic Party and was its presidential candidate in the October 2008 presidential election, defeating long-time President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in a second round of voting. He was sworn in as President on November 11, 2008.

Nasheed is commonly known in the Maldives as Anni[1] and is a former member of Parliament for Malé. He was an outspoken critic of Gayoom and his policies. Due to his criticism of the government, over the years he was arrested and sentenced several times.

He was made an Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience in 1991 when he was being held in prison for writing for the popular political magazine known as "Sangu". On April 8, 1992 he was sentenced to three years in prison for "withholding information". He was released in June 1993 and was re-arrested in 1994 and 1995. In 1996 he was sentenced to two years imprisonment for an article he had written.

In 2000, he was elected as a member of the parliament representing the people of Malé. Six months later, in 2001 he was tried and sentenced to two and half years banishment for the theft of unspecified "government property" from H. Velaanaage - the former residence of former president Ibrahim Nasir. Supporters of Nasheed believe that it was a fabricated charge against him motivated by political desires. This was later proved to be so, when Dhivehiobserver (of Ahmed Shafeeq Ibrahim Moosa) published a leaked letter, sent by then Minister of Construction and Public Works Umar Zahir to the former Minister of Defence (later the High Commissioner to Delhi) Anbaree Abdul Sattar. The letter, dated on October 31, 2001, was published on the website on October 10, 2005. According to this letter, Nasheed did take some files from the residence which were about to be destroyed as they were of no value to the government. According to Umar Zahir there was no restricted area for the public in the residence. In his letter Umar Zahir stated "Later that day I did check the storage place from which Mohamed Nasheed apparently took that material. There was nothing there that could be of use. There remained only old written materials and books. Those things have now been burned."

In November 2003, Nasheed left the Maldives and joined Mohamed Latheef to help establish the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), in exile, in Sri Lanka and the UK. He was recognized as a political refugee by the British government in 2004. After about 18 months in self-proclaimed exile, Nasheed returned to Malé on April 30, 2005.

After returning to the Maldives he began promoting the MDP before it was officially recognized by the Government. With the decision to allow political parties in the Maldives, on June 2, 2005 and the official recognition of the MDP's existence, Nasheed accelerated his support campaigns for the party. He made several trips to the Atolls, and neighbouring countries on behalf of the party.

On August 12, 2005, Nasheed was arrested again when he was sitting in the center of the Republican Square, with supporters of MDP, to mark the second anniversary of the Black Friday. His arrest provoked civil unrest in Malé and some other Atolls. After his arrest, acting Government Spokesman Mohamed Hussain Shareef told reporters that Nasheed had been detained for "his own safety." However, on August 22, 2005, the state announced that Nasheed was to be charged with terrorism under the Terrorism Act.

PLOTE TERROR ATTACK TO MALDIVES

Major General Moosa Ali Jaleel (left)
The MAN BEHIND HUMBLE VICTORY on 3rd Nov 1988

AN ILLUTION OR REVOLUTION.
Book by adam Rasheed Ahmed

Maldivians describe 3rd Nov 1988 as 'BADI BURAASFATHI', in Dhivehi local language 'BADI' means 'GUN' or weapons 'BURSAAFATHI' means last day of the week THURSDAY. The new Maldivian young generation describe "BADI" as a prostitution.

This book will cover detail research & analysis about 3rd Nov 1988 in deferent two angles,

1-Some Possibilities may have International intervention behind the DRAMA.

2-The intentions behind the TERROR ATTACK may have deferent school of thoughts, PLOTE & two Maldivians Abdulla Luthfi & Sagar Nasir two stakeholders may have deferent & separate agendas.

During that time I was sent to behind BARS as a POLITICAL PRISONERS & all terrorist were in the same jail Island. The TERROR GROUP LEADERS namely , RR , FAROOQ & I saw them daily basis rest of there members were among them.

Myself & my friend Mr.Zahir we both arrested because of an allegation & claimed by a Notational Security Services (NSS) staff by midnight about ONE O’clock in the morning .Thank GOD, my friend Mr.Zahir was very lucky he was released after 48 hrs since the Inteligenc information has clear that I have discussed the subject.

I was taken to NSS head quarters kept in a plastic chair without sleep & body wash for 05 days & 05 nights, facing my face towards a wall. This is the only place where I have experienced in my life how BADLY a human being can approach to a human during investigation carried by NSS ELITE interrogators for political prisoners, namely officer Mr.WAAWU LHA HUTHTHU (nick Name).

Suddenly the lovely feeling & caring of my innocent MUM was triggered on my neuron, heart & mind. Since a young staff sergeant bleguarded at me by using filthy languages about my MUM & me. That maybe a reason why I have got EGO centric challenging tolerance not to sign & agree me on my statement for their claim.

The officer claims were that I have discussed about 3rd Nov 1988 hostage crises owhich took place on International waters. Acording to them there was a report with evidence that I have mentioned President Maumoon Abdull Gayyoom has responsible for those died onboard MV / PROGRESS LIGHT

( Cargo Ship ) since he has allowed Military to fire gunshot as a head of Maldives armed forces NSS.

After BLOODY DARK 5 days & 5 nights without my body wash & sleep I was taken to a remote Island Jailed where PLOTE group leaders & members who was capture by Indian Military.
The mentioned GAAMAADHOO Jail Island was secured by Indian military force & management is controlled by NSS officers under regulate by Prisons Division. What inside & outside jailed was fully controlled by NSS since the area is high security zone during that time. This is the place where Indian Military was camped & based with military equipments.

During my captivity in Gaamaadhoo Jail several times I have taken to Maldives Defense Ministry & escorted me to POLICE COURT & finally I was sentenced to banish to Remote Island for 03 months as a POLITICAL PRISONER.

According to judge I was guilty since NSS officer has given evidence. I have rejected there statement for the allegation. My statement on the issue was reveal by POLICE COURT JUDGE.

I wrote, in my statement "I am Adam Rasheed Ahmed has captured on 26th Jul 1989 on allegation about mentioned claim & It was not true & I am fully disagree on the officers statement. This is how my statement was given.

The POLICE COURT is the one & only place where political prisoners sentence' according to there standards & rules later on Qayyoom desided not to operate the mentioned court.

Make sure that you have not done anything against to Islam & Maldives & International LAW than concentrating behind bars was not a BAD experience.BEHIND BARS I learned lot of expeirnces with ZERO TOLERANCE & I desided to collect information about the subject up now I collected lot of informations & this right time to compile this information as a book.

Due to my humble, poor & small family I have not even got chance to be a University dropout. Thanks ALLAH I have got an opportunity to study up to grade 12 in MALDIVES.

Since I am keenly interested to collect informations about the subject I have taken challeng of travelling sevaral places in the world namely in SAARC & ASIAN I have read some books namely INTERNATIONAL INTERVENTION by Dr.ROHAN GUNARATHNA, INSIDE RAW by Mr.ASHOKA RAINA,ASSASSINATION OF RAJIV GANDHI by DR.SUBRAMNIAM SWAMI & COLOMBO ASSIGNMENT by J.N DIXIT & etc.

I met my
Favourite writer Dr. Rohan Gunarathna during 1990's & 2009 that was my pleasure.

I hope I can publish & have launch this BOOK in Colombo by very near future.
