NAS AND HRA Palace Hotel ( NASIR AND HURRIYA )
Closing of NASANDHRA PALACE HOTEL in Maldives capital was a politically motivated decision by Ex-preseident Maumoon Abdull Qayyoom.
According to Dhivehi Radheef ( Maldivian dictionary for local language dhivehi ) mentioned that meaning of NASANDHURA means SHADE (Exp: Shade of a tree). It try to get the more detail about how this word came to Maldives Language & unable to get more details from the related authorities.
This hotel was the first tourist hotel open by Maldives government specially in Capital Island Male. This was built by late HEP Ibrahinm Nasir. My late father Maavadi AHAMMED (nick name) Ahmed Ibrahim & late Knadhili Abdull Gadhir Ibrahim Nasir's private & personal Carpenter was contracted to build this hotel under supervisopon directly from Ibrahim Nasir.
It seem's that this name was desided by late Ibrahim Shihab Maldivian welknown Politician late father of Bageechaage Mr.Mohamed Shihab.
Ex-presixent Qayyoom demolish Ibrahim Nasir's private home called H.Velaanaage built by same mentioned carpenter. After complete demolition of VELAANAAGE the next was Nasandhra.
In my short research shows that this was politically motivated action since this was the last LAND MARK by Ibrahim Nasir. The other finding Shows that when we separate the NASANDHRA / NAS AND HRA / The first 3 letter NAS represent NASIR second 3 represents AND 3rd 3 letters represent HRA represents HURRIYA.
In arabic language HURRIYA means independence.
This bulding & hotel related to Ibrahim Nasir & his great work of Maldives independence from Britain this may be the reason this place was cloed & government media revealed concept of public park to be build after demolition of Nasandhra.
When Nasandhra was it was one of profitable business unit of government related business entity the asset value was about 30 million Maldivian Ryffiya & net profit was about 19 million Maldivian Rufiya. Nasandhra was closed in 2009 during ex-president last days of office the industry claimed this was politically motivated decision taken by government.
On July 26, 1965, Maldives gained independence under an agreement signed with United Kingdom. The British government retained the use of the Gan and Hitaddu facilities. In a national referendum in March 1968, Maldivians abolished the sultanate and established a republic.
The Second Republic was proclaimed in November 1968 under the presidency of Ibrahim Nasir, who had increasingly dominated the political scene. Under the new constitution, Nasir was elected indirectly to a four-year presidential term by the Majlis (legislature). He appointed Ahmed Zaki as the new prime minister.
In 1973 Nasir was elected to a second term under the constitution as amended in 1972, which extended the presidential term to five years and which also provided for the election of the prime minister by the Majlis. In March 1975, newly elected prime minister Zaki was arrested in a bloodless coup and was banished to a remote atoll. Observers suggested that Zaki was becoming too popular and hence posed a threat to the Nasir faction.
